Selecting the right roofing contractor starts with making a telephone call. When you begin the search for contractors, we recommend that you keep a record of all the calls you make. Note down the contractor’s name, phone number and the date and time you called. When the contractor returns your call, note the time and date in the log. This may sound excessive or silly to some, but noting how fast a contractor gets back to you is an indicator of how much they pay attention to their business.
Contractors who never return your call and those who take too long to get back to you raise red flags and are probably the ones you should avoid. Slow response for a request for new work means no response to calls about work done poorly. Ideally, a contractor should return your call within a few hours. Once your renovation job is started, your calls should be returned within an hour or less. There should also be the option for you to reach the contractor immediately in a crisis situation.
The initial phone call can tell you much about a contractor’s personality and their people skills. If during the phone call, the contractor is elusive, rude and brief during your conversation, this may hint that he or she has no social skills and that cooperation may not be a good idea. If they are approachable, good listeners and willing to describe what their work plan entails, you should consider them as an option.
